A: It is very common for new fathers to feel stressed during the initial phases of parenthood. They may feel sad or fatigued, be overwhelmed. Fathers who are young, have a history of depression, with financial issues or relationship issues are at risk of post partum emotional changes . This is the reason why there are antenatal classes for couples ,so that both wife and husband can be physically and emotionally prepared for parenthood.
New fathers should accept this emotional phase and communicate their stress and worry with their partner, family or friends. As a partner, it is very important that you too understand their feeling and support each other. New fathers should not hesitate to seek medical help if they feel that they are unable to cope with current challenges. Seeking help can also be through support groups, apps etc and should not be considered as lack of confidence , shame or stigma.
